The Teller and the Truth: poster e trailer del mystery di Andrew Shapter

Ci sono sguardi conturbanti ed enigmatici difficili da decifrare e dimenticare, come quello di Francis Wetherbee, bella e misteriosa cassiera di una piccola banca texana di Smithville, scomparsa il 30 dicembre 1974, dopo essere stata presa in ostaggio e rilasciata durante una rapina nello stesso istituto di credito dove lavorava.

Una settimana più tardi l’auto viene trovata nel letto di un fiume, ma il suo corpo mai recuperato è stato trasformato dal tempo e dall’immaginario collettivo in una sorta di mito leggendario, quanto l’ultimo ritratto fatto prima della scomparsa dal fotografo Paul Amos McQueen, a finito per diventare un icona per organizzazioni come il NCMA, dedicate alle persone scomparse nel nulla.

Un simbolo che per quasi un quarantennio ha alimentato ricerche, domande, interpretazioni, fino al lungometraggio The Teller and the Truth, diretto da Shapter Andrew, sceneggiato dallo stesso con Patty Moynahan e prodotto dalla Roadwings Entertainment, che seguendo nuovi indizi in giro per il mondo, parte alla ricerca della verità che circonda la scomparsa di Francis Wetherbee, dal Chennai indiano a Westwood in New Mexico, passando per la Girona spagnola, Francoforte, Dubai, Oakland, Joshua Tree, Smithville, Austin, Flagstaff in Arizona, Oyster Bay a New York.

Un viaggio sulle tracce di quello sguardo e la personalità che cela, forse anche un destino, che sfrutta la popolarità della vicenda e della foto trasformata in locandina del film, dei numerosi avvistamenti e le ricostruzioni.

Un Mystery con stile documentaristico, che a distanza di quasi quattro decenni, scava nelle dinamiche che hanno scatenato l’immaginario, tornando a chiedersi cosa succede alle persone scomparse, varando ipotesi negative e positive, cosa le provoca e quali conseguenze possono avere. Un film che dovrebbe arrivare nelle sale americane il 18 gennaio 2014, ma possiamo sbirciare nel poster e il trailer.

Now, almost 40 years later, Francis’ “cold case” is the subject of a new investigation by a Texas filmmaker who hopes to reveal new truths about the bank teller, Francis Wetherbee.
