Black Nativity – la colonna sonora del musical con Jennifer Hudson e Forest Whitaker
A fine novembre debutta negli States Black Nativity, adattamento dell’omonimo musical natalizio di cui oggi vi proponiamo la colonna sonora ufficiale.
Black Nativity è diretto dall’attrice e regista Kasi Lemmons che dopo ruoli in Senza tregua, Il silenzio degli innocenti e Candyman debutta dietro la macchina da presa nel 1997 con il drammatico La baia di Eva prodotto e interpretato da Samuel L. Jackson.
Il cast del film è stellare e include l’attrice premio Oscar Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls), Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Tyrese Gibson, Vondie Curtis-Hall, i cantanti Mary J. Blige e Jacob Latimore e il rapper Nas.
Il musical cui si ispira il film è una rivisitazione della storia classica della Natività con un cast composto interamente da cantanti di colore. La scaletta dello show includeva tradizionali canti natalizi eseguiti in stile gospel, con l’aggiunta di un paio di brani composti appositamente per lo spettacolo. Originariamente scritto da Langston Hughes, lo spettacolo è stato messo in scena per la prima volta l’11 Dicembre 1961.
La trama del film è un adattamento contemporaneo dello spettacolo di Hughes e segue le vicissitudini di Langston (Jacob Latimore), un adolescente di Baltimora allevato da una madre single (Jennifer Hudson) che viaggia fino a New York per trascorrere le vacanze di Natale con I suoi parenti che praticamente non conosce, il reverendo Cornell e Aretha Cobbs (Forest Whitaker e Angela Bassett). Langston che non ha intenzione di vivere secondo le regole imposte dal Reverend Cobbs decide di tornare a casa da sua madre imbarcandosi in un sorprendente viaggio ispiratore durante il quale insieme ai suoi nuovi amici e grazie ad un po’ di intervento divino scoprirà il vero senso della fede e della famiglia.
